George grew-up in Dover, Massachusetts attending Charles River School, Noble & Greenough, MassBay Community College, and helicopter flight school, while also briefly working as an animal control and special police officer for Natick, Massachusetts. In 1982, he also volunteered with the Massachusetts County Mounted Patrol in Quincy, where he was an apprentice horseback riding instructor, and, a motorcycle instructor. In 1984, he moved to Laramie, Wyoming, with a horse in tow, to attend the University of Wyoming, which included an internship with the Law Enforcement Division of the U.S. Forest Service, and, an internship with Albany County, Wyoming Sheriff’s Office. In 1987, George moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to do his Master’s degree at Colorado State University, where he also attended the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy while working part-time for the Larimer County, Colorado Sheriff’s Department. In 1991, George commuted from Fort Collins to attend the University of Wyoming’s College of Law. In the meantime, his two daughters were both born in Colorado. In 1999, George moved back to his home on Pegan Hill in Dover, again bringing along with him, his two horses “Dusty” and “Sparky” (his miniature horse).

Since returning from Colorado, George has worked in various law firms in Chestnut Hill, Brockton, South Natick, and Framingham, while also working as a manager at REI in Framingham from 2000 to 2003, and, a brief stint on the Island of St. Kitts studying the country’s ecosystem. In 2004, George’s oldest daughter came from Switzerland to live with George in Dover where she attended Dover/Sherborn’s Middle and High Schools. She eventually moved back to Geneva to finish high school with her sister at Ecole Internationale de Geneve. Currently, George’s oldest daughter is working for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in Bangkok, Thailand, having since graduated from American University in Washington D.C. George’s youngest daughter was just recently sworn-in as a Swiss citizen, and, is a recent graduate of the Royal Holloway University of London. Both daughters are highly experienced skiers and horse riders.

George is the captain of a ski racing team at Wachusett, after spending two years as the Head Coach for the Needham High School Ski Team. George recently served on the Advisory Board for the Broadmoor Sanctuary of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, and, over the years the Mumford family has been very involved with the conservation efforts of many other organizations, including the Mirimachi Salmon Association; the Charles River Watershed Association; The Trustees of Reservations; and, The New England Forestry Foundation. The “Mumford Wildlife Forest” is now part of a 100-acre reservation of conserved land in Dover and Natick. The Pegan Hill Reservation was once 50 acres of George’s grandparents’ farm and forest, where he lived for most of his life. Now, through the conservation efforts of the various organizations mentioned, Pegan Hill is one of the most beautiful parcels in New England, with wetlands, rolling fields, and spectacular 60-mile vistas!
